Association of polymorphisms in the leptin and thyroglobulin genes with meat quality and carcass traits in beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Carvalho,Thiago Dutra de; Siqueira,Fabiane; Torres Júnior,Roberto Augusto de Almeida; Medeiros,Sérgio Raposo de; Feijó,Gelson Luís Dias; Souza Junior,Maury Dorta de; Blecha,Isabella Maiumi Zaidan; Soares,Cleber Oliveira.
The objective of the present study was to estimate the allelic and genotypic frequencies of the polymorphisms E2FB (AY138588.1: c.305C> T), located in the leptin gene (LEP), and TG5 (X05380.1:g.-422C>T), located in the thyroglobulin gene (TG), and evaluate the association of these polymorphisms in crossbred cattle of seven distinct genetic groups with the following traits: slaughter weight (SW), hot carcass weight (HCW), hot carcass yield (HCY), carcass fat thickness (CFT), ribeye area (REA), marbling (MARM) and shear force (SF). The animals were genotyped using the PCR-RFLP (Polymorphism Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) technique, using 201 products obtained from F1 Caracu × Nellore, Angus × Nellore and Valdostana × Nellore...

Estimating forage intake of lactating dual-purpose cows using chromium oxide and n-alkanes as external markers Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Dimas Estrasulas de; Medeiros,Sérgio Raposo de; Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo; Aroeira,Luís Januário Magalhães; Silva,Sila Carneiro da.
The n-alkanes have been used to estimate forage dry matter intake, digestibility and the diet composition in grazing animals. The objective this study was to compare chromium oxide and n-alkanes techniques used to estimate forage intake. Twenty lactating dual-purpose cows receiving two sources of fat (treatments: conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) or Megalac (control)) plus 4 kg of concentrate were dosed with n-alkanes and chromium oxide to estimate the intake of stargrass (Cynodon nlemfüensis Vanderyst var. nlemfüensis). The in vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility of the stargrass and concentrate were used to estimate the nutritive value of the digesta. The n-alkanes between C23 and C36 were quantified in the digesta and feces. The regression between...

Mathematical models in ruminant nutrition Scientia Agricola
Tedeschi,Luís Orlindo; Fox,Danny Gene; Sainz,Roberto Daniel; Barioni,Luís Gustavo; Medeiros,Sérgio Raposo de; Boin,Celso.
Mathematical models can be used to improve performance, reduce cost of production, and reduce nutrient excretion by accounting for more of the variation in predicting requirements and feed utilization in each unique production situation. Mathematical models can be classified into five or more categories based on their nature and behavior. Determining the appropriate level of aggregation of equations is a major problem in formulating models. The most critical step is to describe the purpose of the model and then to determine the appropriate mix of empirical and mechanistic representations of physiological functions, given development and evaluation dataset availability, inputs typically available and the benefits versus the risks of use associated with...

Parametrization of the Davis Growth Model using data of crossbred Zebu cattle Scientia Agricola
Biase,Adriele Giaretta; Dias,Carlos Tadeu dos Santos; Barioni,Luís Gustavo; Albertini,Tiago Zanett; Martorano,Lucieta Guerreiro; Oltjen,James W.; Lanna,Dante Pazzanese Duarte; Oliveira,Patrícia Perondi Anchão; Medeiros,Sérgio Raposo de; Torres Júnior,Roberto Augusto de Almeida.
ABSTRACT: The system of differential equations proposed by Oltjen et al. [1986, named Davis Growth Model (DGM)] to represent cattle growth has been parameterized with data from Bos taurus (British) and Bos indicus (Nellore) breeds. The DGM has been successfully used for simulation and decision support in the United States. However, the effect of about 30 years of genetic improvement and the use of different breeds may affect the model parameter values, which also may need to be re-estimated for crossbred animals. The aim of this study was to estimate parameter values and confidence intervals for the DGM with growth and body composition data from Zebu crossbred animals. Confidence intervals and asymptotic distribution were generated through nonparametric...
